Having Fun While Building Your Wealth

Hello My Twenty-Something Friends, Recently, I wrote a letter about using the decade after you finished school as the decade to build your financial empire (or, at least the foundation of it). But let me make something clear…I want you to have fun while building your wealth. So, today I am going to discuss this idea of having fun during this period.

Have Fun and Create Happy Memories

Your twenties are your first full decade of being an adult. So, while I want you to have a decade of building your wealth, I also want you to have a decade of having fun and creating sparkly happy memories.

I think a lot about the pleasure of having happy memories. Given that fact, it should come as no surprise that I am a big proponent of putting effort into creating those happy memories. Why?

The reason that I think that happy memories are important is because they give us current bits of fun that we can revisit in recent times and in the distant future.  In fact, happy memories can be the buoy that keeps us afloat during tough times.

Furthermore, there is a book called, The Art of Making Memories. According to the author,  happy memories are good for our mental health! They strengthen our sense of self and strengthen our connections with others.

How To Create Happy Memories

These are my tips for creating memories:

  • Do unique things. Lasting memories are formed when we do something out of the ordinary.
  • Involve as many senses as possible.
  • Humor is said to increase the likelihood of retaining a memory. So, have fun.
  • Document the experiences using things such as photos and videos.
  • After the events and activities are over, spend time reviewing the documentation and discussing the events. Share with those who were present at the event and those who were not.

40 Affordable Ways To Have Fun While Building Your Wealth

Now that you know that I want you to have a fun time during your twenties, what are some suggestions for some fun ways to do so, while at the same time, not breaking the bank? Here are 40 ideas.

Outdoor Activities:

  1. Play outside with water balloons on a hot day.
  2. On a snowy day, build a snowman.
  3. Visiting national parks.
  4. Do a plein-air painting.
  5. Visit a sculpture park or sculpture garden. Some are free.
  6. Play catch with a friend.
  7. Camp in your backyard with a tent.
  8. Go stargazing. You can lie down on a blanket on the ground or in the back of a pickup truck.
  9. Go for a walk together. Going through a park is fun. But, so is taking a walk on some Main Street.
  10. Take a night time walk.

Food Activities:

  1. Cooking together at home.
  2. Try a cooking class.
  3. Roast marshmallows. If you don’t have a campfire, you can use a gas stove.
  4. Go to a farmers market.
  5. Have someone over just for dessert.
  6. Have a Chopped cooking night. This is based on the television show. One person does dinner. Another person does dessert. Each person provides the other with surprise ingredients, and the other has to use those ingredients to make their portion of the meal.
  7. Bake together.

Other Activities:

  1. If close enough to Washington DC, visit the Smithsonian Museums (since there is no admission fee.)
  2. Start a book club.
  3. Do a game night with some friends and family.
  4. Have a sleepover with some friends. Use sleeping bags and/or tents.
  5. Go window shopping. You can do this in a mall or on Main Street (or anywhere with a lot of shops).
  6. Go to a fancy hotel and just have drinks in the bar. (This can be non-alcoholic.)
  7. Volunteer at a pet shelter.
  8. Visit an art gallery.
  9. Do a manicure day with friends.
  10. Go out for karaoke night.
  11. Visit a local museum. Some paid museums even have free days.
  12. Go swimming in a local pool.
  13. Go rock climbing at a rock climbing facility.
  14. Binge watch a series.
  15. Make a dream board or a vision board.
  16. Visit an independent bookstore.
  17. BYOB painting.
  18. Trivia night: You can do this at home with friends and family, or go out to one hosted at a local venue.
  19. Do a scavenger hunt with friends.
  20. Go on a sunrise picnic.
  21. Do Mad Libs. Mad Libs are quite humorous to do with other people. But, if you do them by yourself, write your word categories on a separate piece of paper. List your words to correspond with the category. Then go back and use your words to fill in the categories. The link that I included are for adult Mad Libs. But, there are lots of general Mad Libs for a variety of ages.
  22. Do a jigsaw puzzle. If you don’t finish the puzzle in one sitting, it could be useful to have a puzzle mat.
  23. Do some crafting.

I am stopping at 40 ideas for budget friendly fun. But, I bet that you can think of more.
